A New Story

As this year (and in fact, this decade) comes to a close, things are changing. With the end of a year approaching, we tend to reflect on the past year, maybe regret some things, are grateful for some things, and then we look forward to the new year with new hopes, dreams and goals.

In light of the season coming to a close, I am in a huge transition. Over the past month or so, I have struggled with guilt and shame (total hypocrisy relative to my last post) because of my job circumstances. It’s been a hard transition of feeling stuck, confused, wandering and disliking my work. But after weeks of searching, seeking, praying, applying, contacting and reaching out, I am finally entering a new workplace.

The point is not my work specifically. For most of my work life, I have worried about and disliked the idea of my job overtaking my life and I haven’t wanted my life to revolve around my work. But over the past couple days, God has given me a change of perspective towards the work I’m about to start.

The point is this: maybe, in a sense, my work will be overtaking my life. But when it comes down to it, that’s the wrong perspective. God is giving me the opportunity and opening the door to a story I have the privilege of participating in and being a protagonist in. God has given me the opportunity to be a light to the people I will be working with, as well as the “customers.” This is not about work.

This is about God inviting me to a new season — a new chapter in the story of my life, as well as in the story of every…
