Something Greater

Over the past few weeks, the whole world has blown up about the coronavirus. Colorado has been severely impacted by it, more so than any other state in the country. Places like hospitals and nursing homes are basically hotspots for the virus.

That includes me. I work at a nursing home.

It’s a blessing because while most everyone around me has lost their job, I still have one, and if anything, am now in even higher demand than before all this.

Things are crazy at work, but I have really tried to bring a spirit of peace, hope and joy. As of a few days ago, everyone on staff has to wear a face mask for the entirety of their shift, and everyone gets their temperature taken as soon as they come into the building. If someone comes in and has a temperature higher than 99.5, they are sent home and can’t come back to work for at least three days, or until they no longer have a fever. Additional precautionary measures include hand sanitizer available everywhere, residents being isolated in their rooms, and no visitors allowed into the building until a date that keeps being pushed back every time it comes close.

For me, that means I serve up lunch and dinner plates to an empty dining room, and the CNA’s take each plate to each individual room.

I know I’m at risk of getting sick, and even more at risk of getting the residents sick, but like I said, I am not directly exposed to most of them.
